Other than powerful attack spells and sealing, soul metal is the only known alloy that can physically hurt a Horror and defeat it in combat. The alloy can burn and inflict physical pain to its target and can regenerate from physical damage. The blade reacts to a knight's focus; they can make the blade light as a feather or heavy as a boulder. Depending on the knight's will over his sword, the blade can move and fight based on the knight's throw. However, it can't return to its user unless it's already mid-motion.

If it's stuck to a surface, it will remain stuck until the knight retrieves it. While the knights predominately use makai blades, it is not just exclusive for them. Mastery of Soul Metal requires several years of practice. It takes a knight-in-training at least a decade to completely master use of it. However, there are certain priests that mastered its use as well. Certain priests carry makai daggers, smaller makai blades for melee combat. There have been rare exceptions, a highly trained martial artist may develop the ability to wield a makai blade. A means to cheat the process, used by Priestess Yuna, is to take the bone of the blade's former master, Kurōdo.
From observations, Makai Blades usually produced as bladed weapons. For Soul Metal training, knives made of soul metal are used. Titled Makai Knights shown to have variety of Makai Blades ranging from swords, spears, axes, and bladed bows. For instance, Garo's Makai Blade takes form of long swords whereas Zero being twin short swords, Dan being a spear, Gai being a bladed longbow, and Zen being a scimitar. Non-titled Makai Knights's Makai Blades however, takes form of a plain long swords instead.
Makai World
Makai World is the inter-dimensional negative realm, home of Makai Beasts. It is only featured in the live-action series, the Original Series and Ryūga-verse. The demon world is a desolate barren realm, akin to a mountainous desert. There's no water nor sun, but the there's endless stone and rubble. Despite having no sun, the entire world is illuminated in a gray and white hue without clouds. Although appearing empty, it is the home of some of the most dangerous creatures like Horrors, Bargs, and Dragons. Much about this world is unexplained, but this world relies on the mortal realm's energies to sustain it, including negative energies.
Makai Tree Miki
Makai Tree is a tree-like creature that resides in the Makai Forest. She kept Jabi within her stomach. Inside her stomach, the Makai Tree's a round squid-like creature with multiple eyes. She has many tentacles and can shoot spears out of her "body" to defend herself. She's not a malicious creature; she kept Jabi sleeping inside her stomach for a 200 year incubation. She claimed that Jabi wasn't ready to reincarnate when Kouga came to save her.
Kouga at first had to fight off the Makai Tree's illusionary attacks. The Makai Tree has the ability to take on the forms of people within the memories of Kouga. For Kouga it as easy when Barago, Kodama, and Rei appeared, but the most difficult was when Kaoru and Taiga's form was taken. Eventually Kouga learned to suppress his feelings just long enough to defeat the Makai Tree on the first round. During the second round Kouga had Gouten increase the Fanged Wolf Horse-Slashing Sword twice its size and surfed the sword into the Makai Tree's stomach. The Makai Tree's stomach exploded and Jabi was saved. Jabi was spirited back to the living. The Makai Tree was only defeated, not destroyed. The Makai Tree is voiced by : Yukari Okuda.
Small Makai Dragons
Small Makai Dragons are magical creatures that are summoned by Makai Priests for combating Horrors.
Small Makai Dragons are fish-like reptilian creatures that live in another realm, suggestively the Makai Realm. Tamed and controlled by Makai Priests, they are used in sensory detection, scouting, combat, and messaging. Their sharp jaws are used for tearing things apart while their nose give them a unique ability to smell and detect things. Intuitive creatures, they don't need much explanation from their casters to know they're being summoned for either tracking or attacking a target.
When summoned in a large group, they are used for offensive attacks. Makai Priestess Rekka summons them to swarm attack Horrors and they will attack in a frenzy akin to piranhas, tearing its target apart. For tracking, singular ones can be summoned and can even reside in items, like Kouga's duster, for long periods of time without the need to return to its realm.
When in danger of death, they can vaporize back to their realm and can be re-summoned by the priest. They actually think and feel like humans, but can't express themselves fully. The only exception was Meru/ Kaoru. Kouga's personal small makai dragon that made it to the Promised Land. It was only then Kaoru was fully able to express and interact with its master. Highly reliable for various missions, they are preferred tools in the fight against darkness.
